Journey into the heart of the real Malaysia with this fascinating heritage day tour that takes in a fort, a palm oil centre, a charcoal factory, a fishing village and the city of Taiping, with its wealth of colonial-era architecture. Lunch in a traditional restaurant is also included.
Enjoy an exhilarating ferry ride across the Penang Straits to Butterworth on the mainland, the gateway to west Malaysia. Stop at Ngah Ibrahim's Fort, where one of the first and most prominent resistance fighters against British colonialism lived. Move on to an oil palm collection centre to get a closer look and feel of this important commodity that is used in the production of soap, cleaning products, cosmetics, lubricants and more.
Head to the coastal town of Kuala Sepetang, where Malaysia’s first railway line was built. It is now the site of a charcoal factory, where mangrove timber is processed into high-quality charcoal. Continue to a picturesque Chinese fishing village, where fish are gutted, sprinkled with salt and then left to dry in the hot sun for several days. The result is desiccated fish, free of moisture, which can be kept for months.
Continue to Taiping, which means ‘peace’ in Chinese, and drive through broad boulevards where trees form shady canopies. Visit the Lake Gardens and the cemetery of the Commonwealth soldiers who died during World War II. After this poignant moment, it’s time for lunch followed by the Taiping Museum and a return across a 13.5km-long bridge to Penang.
