Visit the Kek Lok Si Temple or Temple of Ten Thousand Buddhas - infinitely intriguing from the start. It is one of the largest Chinese temples in Malaysia and the biggest Buddhist temple in South East Asia. Among the other features is the Tortoises' Pond of longevity where devotees release the creatures to earn blessings in life and Seven Tier Pagoda that incorporates Chinese, Thai & Burmese architecture. The Hall of Devas where the four Kings (guardians of mankind) are encased in glass and at their feet are the wicked, writhing in agony. In 2002, a 30.2m bronze statue of the Kuan Yin was built on the hillside above the pagoda and upon completion was opened to the public. Penang Hill, a cool resort accessible by comfortable Swiss-made coaches which takes 10 minutes to reach the peak. It offers a refreshing garden quality, with old colonial mansions that are reminiscent of an old English village. The early evening offers a cool respite as you head for the Bellevue Hotel with its flower gardens and well tended lawns which provide a panoramic view of Penang with its twinkling city lights during the evening (on a clear day).
