Youths Organization is working to accomplish the Kenyan Government’s National HIV/AIDS Strategic Plan. This plan addresses all aspects of prevention, care and support in a cohesive and accurate manner. It also seeks to mitigate the social and economic impact of HIV/AIDS in the community.
The objectives of this programme are to reduce mortality rates, stigma and discrimination of people living with HIV/AIDS, and to provide quality care and support to people living with HIV/AIDS. As a volunteer, you will work with community health workers, caregivers, other volunteers and social workers. Your duties will vary but may include:
1. Intervention advocacy;
2. Home-based care;
3. Nutritional assistance;
4. Carrying out HIV testing, prevention training and counseling.
Like the orphanages, MICATZ works to be as self sustaining and self sufficient as possible. The programme funds a garden in Kiamunyi (Nakuru district) and the fruits and vegetables grown here are regularly distributed to HIV/AIDS patients for nutritional assistance. As a volunteer, you will visit the garden regularly to help pick and distribute produce. As well as delivering this produce to patients, you may also provide home based assistance to the patient.
This could include taking the patients for walks, cooking, cleaning and carrying out other household chores that the patients may be too sick to perform for themselves. Other times, you may simply need to sit and talk to the patient (as a visitor, your mere presence in the home is a comfort and helps to reduce the stigma of HIV/AIDS).
