Madaba, Mount Nebo and Bethany Tour from Amman

We’ll take you first to Madaba, the ‘City of Mosaics’, to see the mosaic of the holy land in the Basilica of St George and afterwards to Mount Nebo from where Moses saw the Promised Land. Before heading back to Amman, visit Bethany, where John the Baptist lived and baptised.

Madaba’s real masterpiece, in the Greek Orthodox Basilica of St George, is the 6th century AD mosaic map of Jerusalem and the Holy Land – the earliest religious map of the Holy Land in any form to survive from antiquity. It truly is a sight to behold. Proceed to Mount Nebo, from where Moses viewed the Holy Land of Canaan that he would never enter. He died and was buried in Moab, ‘in the valley opposite Beth-Peor’ (Deuteronomy 34:6). His tomb remains unknown. After consulting the Oracle, Jeremiah reportedly hid the Ark of the Covenant, the Tent and the Altar of Incense at Mount Nebo. Continue to Bethany, the site of John the Baptist's settlement at Bethany Beyond the Jordan, where Jesus was baptised, has long been known from the Bible (John 1:28 and 10:40) and from Byzantine and medieval texts.
