This excursion brings you to the ancient site of the Romans, one of the best preserved in the Middle East. Then watch past comes alive at the well-preserved 12th century castle in Ajloun, which was built at the top of a prominent hill to protect the area from Crusader attacks.
A close second to Petra on the list of favourite destinations in Jordan is the ancient city of Jerash, which boasts an unbroken chain of human occupation dating back more than 6,500 years. The city's golden age came under Roman rule and the site is now generally acknowledged to be one of the best-preserved Roman provincial towns in the world. Proceed to Ajloun. Its castle, known locally as Qal'at (Castle) Ar-Rabad was built in 1184 by 'Izz ad-Din Usama bin Munqidh, a general of Saladin, who defeated the Crusaders in 1187. The fortress is a fine example of Islamic architecture and dominated a wide stretch of the northern Jordan Valley and passages to it.
