Transfer to the historic Imperial Hotel, Japan’s first guesthouse for visiting dignitaries. Visit Osaka’s National Museum of Modern Art and take the short train ride to the 8th century capital, Nara; filled with shrines and temples from its former glory. Board the shinkansen or ‘bullet train’ to Hiroshima; a vibrant, interesting metropolis with friendly, welcoming people. See the Peace Park and Museum here, a sobering, moving experience. Take a look around the city’s world class museums and see the floating Torii gate of Miyajima, ranked as one of Japan’s top three most beautiful sights. Go to the ‘art island’ of Naoshima and stay in a specially designed gallery house as you explore the island’s many artworks. Stay in a 250 year old traditional Japaneseryokan and enjoy a kaiseki, a beautifully presented meal. Relax in your yukata (cotton robe) and take an after dinner soak in your onsen. Visit Japan’s first Museum of Western Art which houses works from Picasso, Gauguin, Rodin, Pollock and Kandinsky. Visit Kenrokuen, ranked as one of the top three most beautiful gardens in Japan. Journey to Kyoto and study calligraphy, one of Japan’s Traditional Arts. Discover this beautiful city with a knowledgeable local guide. Head for the buzzing capital, Tokyo and embark on an ‘Old and New’ tour with an expert guide. Start at the Old District and Tokyo National Museum, the National Museum of Western art and the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum. In the afternoon, head for the new district, Roppongi, home to many of Tokyo’s contemporary art spaces and museums.
