The site of the Basilica dedicated to St. Clemente, the fourth Pope, is a unique example of the coexistence of Paganism and Christianity you can find in Rome! The XII century basilica on the modern ground level is built over the original church dating back to the IV century AD. A third, lower level, includes an ancient temple dedicated to the god Mithra, and a I century AD palace. Then, on our way to the Santi Quattro Coronati, we will stop by the small chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary built where, according to a medieval legend, Pope Joan, also called La Papessa, gave birth to her child while in procession to the Cathedral of St. John Lateran. In our San Clemente tour you will be told about her life and her shameful and violent death. Finally, you will visit another of Rome’s oldest churches: the Church of Santi Quattro Coronati. The four saints to whom the church is dedicated (Claudius, Nicostratus, Symphorian and Castorius) and are the patron saints of marble masons and sculptors.
