Sarah Dunant's Ferrara in her latest novel "Sacred Hearts"

In 1570 Ferrara was ruled by duke Alfonso II d'Este, but the consequences of the decisions taken at the Council of Trent were soon to become effective and to deeply affect the local power, economy, culture, and social status of the daughters of wealthy and well educated influent families. Sarah Dunant's latest novel Sacred Hearts, 2009, is set in medieval Ferrara, with its Castello, the Cathedral, the convents of Corpus Domini and S. Antonio in Polesine, Costabili Palace, Schifanoia Palace, with frescoes from the 13th up to the 16th century.
