In 1492 the Este duke Ercole I had works started to more than doble Ferrara and to have it surronded by a impressive and revolutionary city wall, long 14,5 km, 9,2 km of which still exist. Splendid buildings such as Palazzo Diamanti — now hosting the Pinacoteca Nazionale and fine art exhibitions — and Palazzo Costabili — now hosting the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Spina, as well as outstanding churches, i. e. San Francesco, Santa Maria in Vado, S. Cristoforo alla Certosa, and open public spaces such as Piazza Nova — now piazza Ariostea — were projected by the revolutionary architect Biagio Rossetti, so as to turn Ferrara into Europe's first modern city.
