Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon 2 day tour

South Coast and Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon Two-day tour from Reykjavik This two-day tour takes us through the beautiful provinces of south Iceland to the extraordinary Jokulsarlon, The Glacier Lagoon, the best known and the largest glacier lake in Iceland. It is situated at the south end of the glacier Vatnajokull between Skaftafell preservation area in Vatnajokull National Park, and the town of Hofn. Itinerary

Day 1

Soon after we leave the city, we will pass the mountain Hengill, a central volcano with a giant magma chamber. We will pass the town Hveragerdi, where you will find many interesting hot springs and travel towards the town Selfoss.

Our tour takes us over the Thjorsa River which is the longest of all rivers in Iceland; around 230 kilometres long. We will stop in the town Hvollsvollur for a coffee break. Then we continue to Seljalandsfoss waterfall which cascades from ancient sea cliffs down over 60 metres to a shallow pool. It is possible to take a walk behind the waterfall and enjoy the beautiful scenery from there. East of the waterfall lies fertile countryside and to the north rises the beautiful Eyjafjallajokull glacier, 1666 metres above sea level, the sixth largest glacier in Iceland.

Our next stop will be at Skogar where we will see Skogafoss waterfall which cascades down around 65 metres and is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Iceland. Next we drive through Myrdalur where we can enjoy a view of Myrdalsjokull glacier under which lies the central volcanic system of Katla.

Our next stop will be at the village Vik where you will find a sandy beach with some fantastic sights such as the picturesque basalt column formations and the magnificent Reynisdrangar peaks. We will continue across Myrdalssandur sand plains, an area of black lava sand and ash of around 700 square kilometres. East of Myrdalssandur we will find Eldgjarhraun lava field, which was formed from the largest lava flow from a single eruption on earth in historic times. Next to the town Kirkjubaejarklaustur we will see the Landbrotsholar hills, one of the largest pseudo-crater areas in the world.

We cross Skeidararsandur, an enormous sand plain that reaches from Skeidararjokull glacier to the sea. We will pass the bridge over Skeidara River which is the longest bridge in Iceland (900 metres) and go to Skaftafell National Park, established in 1967. The glacier tongues give the National Park a majestic scenery. We will have a short stop at Skaftafell before continuing to Jokulsarlon, the glacier lagoon.

Jokulsarlon is the most famous glacier lagoon in Iceland. It is located at the end of Breidamerkujokull, an outlet glacier of the great Vatnajokull glacier. The depth of the lagoon is about 250 meters and its size is 18 square kilometers. Due to glacial retreat, huge pieces of ice break loose from the glaciers and end up floating in the Jokulsarlon lagoon. After we have enjoyed the lagoon with its icebergs we will drive to our accommodation in a nearby place where we will enjoy dinner (dinner is not included in tour price) and relax in the evening.

During winter, if the weather is good and the sky is clear, we will look for the amazing Northern lights at Jokulsarlon.

Day 2
After breakfast we spend some time at Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon and when the lagoon is not frozen you can enjoy a 40 minute boat ride where you sail amongst icebergs of all shapes and sizes. We will also take a walk along the lake and on the black sand shores and look for seals that can often be spotted in the lagoon.

Then we start our journey west towards Reykjavik. The trip is far from over. We pull out the crampons for one hour's long glacier hike and the views are fabulous all the way back. In order to join the glacier hike you will need to have good hiking shoes, crampons cannot be fitted on sneakers or other light walking shoes.

If we have enough time and with good weather conditions, we will visit Dyrholaey, a small but majestic peninsula which is the southernmost point of the mainland. It is 120 metres high and is a home to many breeds of seabird. Dyrholaey was formed in a sub-aquatic eruption about 100 thousand years ago. The translation of the name Dyrholaey could be „Doorway Island“ but the name is drawn from the hole or the doorway the ocean has carved into the cliff.
