Whale Watching Kayak Tour

The gray whale, one of nature’s most magnificent creatures, makes the incredible journey from Alaska to Baja California twice per year - the longest migration of any mammal in the world. Paddle from the sands of La Jolla Shores, along the Sea Caves, through the expansive kelp forests and over the top of the giant underwater canyons, and experience the amazing opportunity to kayak amongst pods of whales as they swim as close to a mile within shore. A truly intimate, up-close and eco-friendly experience that you can’t get on the large whale watching boats.

Tours are held December through March, with the exact start and end dates dependent on sightings. Tours are approximately 3 hours long. Meeting location is at La Jolla Shores shop. Free parking is available on side streets. Please arrive 30 minutes before tour time to check in and get fitted for equipment. Please contact the supplier for up-to-date information on tour times and meeting locations, as they vary and are subject to change without notice. Tours include stable, easy-to-paddle, sit-on-top kayak (single or tandem), paddle, wetsuit and life jacket. Hot chocolate, tea and cider are provided after tour. Waterproof cameras are available for sale. Swimsuits to wear under a wetsuit are recommended. No flip flops, water shoes are preferable, but shoes are not necessary. Small lockers are available.

Participants must be 12 years or older and must be able to swim. No experience necessary, but tour requires a moderate level of physical activity. For safety reasons, going into the caves is not guaranteed and will happen weather permitting. Wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed. Guides are expert naturalists with backgrounds in marine biology, ecology, environmental science photography, and outdoor recreation, and hold advanced certifications in kayak and snorkel instruction, and CPR/First Aid.
