If there's one must-see in Crete, it's the Palace of Knossos. Just south of Heraklion, it's the island's most popular attraction, and for good reason, it's absolutely fascinating. Dating back to 1900BC, it was the hub of Crete's Minoan civilization and where the fearsome Minotaur was said to have lurked in a labyrinth. Your guide will explain the myths surrounding the palace and its kings as you explore its treasures, including the throne room, royal apartments and frescoes. Then we will move on to Heraklion, Crete's capital, for a mini guided tour. See the city walls and old harbour, which is dominated by a 16th century Venetian fortress. There will also be two hours on your own to explore the city at your own leisure, perhaps shopping at the market, walking round the harbour walls or people watching from a waterside cafe. A great day of discovery for history and culture buffs. Hotel pick-ups will be between 6.50-10.15am, with return to your accommodation between 5-6.30pm.
