Meet your guide outside Füssen Station, and then hop aboard your luxury coach for your journey south to the Austrian Alps. After roughly 45 minutes on the road, arrive in the mountain town of Ehrwald and board the glacier cable car for your ride up to the summit of the Zugspitze, a towering peak that straddles the Austrian-German border.
Traveling to an altitude of 9,718 feet (2,962 meters), the cable car lends sublime panoramic views, and as Ehrwald slips from your view, the dramatic alpine peaks of the Zugspitze massif take center stage. Step out at the summit and gaze at the views from various lookout points, while enjoying some free time. If the weather is good, look out for Italy and Switzerland in the distance! Perhaps take a short stroll across the border from Austria to Germany, and relax with a drink at one of Germany’s highest licensed restaurants (open from April to October).
Head down on the cable car with your guide, and then continue your tour by coach to the pretty village of Oberammergau where the famous Passion Play is held once every 10 years. Stroll around with your guide, admiring the village’s pretty Lüftlmalerei and wood carvings before stopping for lunch at leisure (own expense).
In the afternoon, travel to Linderhof Castle – King Ludwig II’s favored retreat – nestled deep in the forest. Ludwig spent more time at Linderhof than any of his other castles, and it served as the ideal place for the eccentric king to idle his time away in peace and quiet. Explore inside Linderhof Castle with your guide and learn about Ludwig while seeing ornate rooms like the king’s bed chamber. Then, head outside to see Venus Grotto – an artificial cave modeled on Capri’s Blue Grotto.
After exploring Linderhof, travel back to Füssen via the Romantic Road. Stop at Wieskirche, a gorgeous Rococo church that enjoys a place on the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage Site list, and pose for photos. Your tour then finishes with a drop-off at Füssen Station.
