The thousand-year Reich that Berlin would be capital of lasted barely 12 years but that harrowing period left a legacy of death and destruction the scars of which are still visible today. This powerful and emotional half-day bike tour explores these open wounds. Visit the former Jewish quarter, the location of Nazi bunkers, an air raid shelter, anti-aircraft installations, war-damaged buildings, resistance monuments, WWII battlefields and more.
The tour covers about 14km (eight miles) in about four-and-a-half hours with stops every few hundred meters to take in the sites. Although very comprehensive, it is not a strenuous schedule.
Your guide will explain how conditions in Germany were such that a psychopath like Adolf Hitler was able to rise to power and carry out the most unimaginable crimes. You will hear of the grim fate of his victims and what life was like in wartime Berlin. See first-hand the impact the Third Reich and the war still have on Berlin as you view the destroyed remnants of the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church and Berlin’s old main train station.
The tour will also where Jewish businesses were destroyed during the notorious Night of Broken Glass. Visit one of the few remaining air raid shelters and see the memorial to the victims of the July 20 Plot to kill Hitler.
