The guide’s commentary on the journey to Normandy sets the scene for the anticipated arrival at Mont Saint-Michel, which has been muse to so many artists over the centuries and is surrounded by the moving sands and the tides that run in ‘at the speed of a galloping horse’. Once there, sit down at the Relais Saint-Michel for a traditional Norman lunch washed down with local cider – while enjoying stunning views of the isle.

Cross the bridge linking the island with the mainland before entering through the Boulevard Gate and then the King’s Gate. Turn into the Grande Rue and pass museums, shops and houses dating from the 15th and 16th centuries and the adorable parish church. Finally, reach the Grand Staircase leading up to the ‘Marvel’ as the abbey is known as. The guided visit covers the interior of the abbey, the cloister and the gardens.
