Hop inside your luxury minivan in central Paris and travel northwest to the little Norman town of Giverny, just over an hour away. Having attracted many of the Impressionist greats of the 19th century, Giverny is awash with sites linked to artists like Renoir and Monet, and you’ll see the best of them on your tour.
Start with a visit to the House of Claude Monet to walk around Monet’s gardens, and learn all about the revered painter from your guide. Hear about his life in the town, and see the pond that prompted Monet to paint his iconic Decorations des Nymphéas (or Water Lilies, as it is perhaps better known). Walk in his footsteps, admiring the wisteria-draped Japanese Bridge that he built, and then head into his house itself to explore, seeing numerous artifacts and sources of inspiration.
Return to your minivan and travel the short journey to Île des Impressionnistes – an island in the Seine, just west of Paris. Also known as the Island of Chatou or Island of Impressionists, the rocky piece of land takes its name from the many 19th-century artists who favored it. Head inside the island’s popular restaurant-museum – La Maison Fournaise – and hear tales of its famous ex-patron, Renoir, while eating lunch. See the legendary Luncheon of the Boating Party by the artist, and then head back to your minivan.
After lunch travel back to Paris and make your way to Tuileries Gardens to visit Musée de l'Orangerie – a museum with a vast collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist artwork. See Monet’s Water Lilies, among other notable works, and learn about other incredible 19th-century artists like Cézanne, Renoir, Picasso, Rousseau, Matisse and Modigliani as you walk around with an audio guide. This 45-minute tour is a fitting end to your Impressionist day.
