Are you up for the best beer and culinary tour in Prague? Then let’s go! Let us lead you on this tour of the most reputable (though not always the most beautiful) beer sanctuaries in the city. A local tour guide leads this Prague beer tour along tram and Metro rides to visit five beer halls where you’ll sample five beers (0.3 L) and four typical Czech 'beer tapas'. (Yes, that is a real thing, promise!)
While appreciating the delicious Czech beer, you will also hear stories about exciting moments in the country’s history and Czech lifestyle, from the Middle Ages through Communism to the present.
We will begin our Prague food tour at the statue of the Czech patron saint, King Wenceslas, on top of Wenceslas Square (Václavské náměstí). It was here that many demonstrations took place during Communism and the Velvet Revolution in 1989 that brought down totalitarian rule.
Next on this beer tour we'll take a tram and arrive at a typical beer hall. On the way to the first pub, we will pass by the tallest television tower adorned with 'crawling babies' by the famous Czech contemporary artist David Cerny (FYI - not as creepy as it sounds!). The beer hall is located in the Prague 3 Zizkov district, home to the biggest density of pubs in the city, and despite that, not many tourists. Prague beer fans have voted this pub the most popular in the city, offering more than ten kinds of beer. Choose from the most famous Czech brands and lesser-known brews from small Czech microbreweries. In this beer hall, visitors can see pictures of the Communist Czech presidents, so naturally this is the best place to tell you fascinating stories about life under Communism. You will also taste marinated streaky pork in chilli and beer, served with horseradish and mustard.
Next, we will take the Metro back to the Old Town and visit the pub where the very first Pilsner Urquell draught was tasted in 1843. Of course, you’ll get to sample Pilsner Urquell, the most famous Czech beer, from a tank rather than a keg, which means that the beer contains less CO2 and therefore tastes much better; it is very difficult to find this kind of beer abroad. There is no better place to tell beer-related stories in Prague than in this pub, and as part of it is set in a former church it's a pretty funky hangout ,too! You will also learn about the birth of Pilsner, one of the most famous beers in the world.
After sampling the world-renowned Pilsner Urquell, we shift gears and head to one of the most famous local microbreweries, founded in 1466. This brewery was returned to the original owners after the fall of Communism in 1989, and we think it is the best place to learn about the beer culture of Czechs today. As this place still brews its own beer, you will be able to taste their products alongside an assortment of cheese in oil and beer.
Then we will head to the pub where executioners would go for a drink in the medieval ages - no joke, it really was! As you savor another of the best Pilsner beers in Prague, you will learn about life during medieval times.
Onwards we'll walk to the pub where customers can tap their own beer, and here we'll treat you to another favourite local beer, as well as pickled sausage, probably the most famous Czech beer snack. We will either finish the tour at this pub or take you to Old Town Square around the corner – whatever you fancy!
