After a hotel pickup from Paphos, travel by air-conditioned coach to Chrysorrogiatissa Monastery, one of the island’s serene religious sites nestled high in the foothills of the Troodos Mountains. Established in the mid-12th century as a beautiful shrine to the Virgin Mary, the monastery fell into disrepair but was restored to its former glory during the 18th century and its architecture is a delight to behold. Walk around the single-aisle church with your guide and admire the fine collection of frescoes that embellish the entranceways.
Continue to nearby Kykkos Monastery, a site known for its lavish interiors and artifacts relating to the Virgin Mary. The working monastery is easily the island’s most extravagant, and its murals and furnishings are incredible. After exploring at leisure, enjoy some free time in the village of Pedoulas. If time permits, pay a visit to the UNESCO-listed Church of Archangel Michael, a stone-clad timber-roofed church that’s home to a collection of Old Testament-inspired frescoes from the 15th century.
From Pedoulas, travel higher into the hills to Mount Olympus, a peak that marks Cyprus’ highest point. Towering over the island at a lofty 6,404 feet (1,952 meters), the mountain is popular with skiers in the winter and acts as a tranquil escape in the hot and humid summer months. Soak up the scenery as you stand at the top and enjoy sweeping vistas over Cyprus and the Mediterranean Sea.
Capture photos of the island panoramas stretching out around you, and then begin your journey back to Paphos. On the way, call in at Omodos, an unspoiled village with a reputation of being the wine capital of Cyprus. Enjoy a stroll around the village’s streets and try a glass of the honey-hued Commanderia, a signature Cypriot wine. Continue to Paphos and finish your day of exploring with a hotel drop-off.
