Sail around scenic Cartagena Bay and visit the historic Fort of San Fernando de Bocachica on an offshore island in the middle of the bay with this fascinating two-hour cruise. You’ll enjoy a new perspective of the city and bay, which is considered one of the most beautiful in the world, and all the main coastal sights and attractions as well as explore the 18th century fortress.
Cartagena de las Indias (Cartagena of the Indies) was founded in 1533 by Spanish conquistadors in a sheltered, paradisiacal bay that had been inhabited by the Calamari people. The areas great natural beauty, its strategic location and the many riches that passed through its port made it a magnet for all types of ambitious men looking to make their fortune, including pirates. To protect their asset, the Spanish built a series of imposing – and it turned out, durable – fortifications that still stand to this day.
See sights such as the Old Town creeping up from behind the city walls; the impregnable-looking San Felipe de Barajas Castle; the formidable Fort of San Sebastian del Pastelillo and the four-pointed star-shaped Fort of Santa Cruz de Castillogrande, which is right on the top of the sea.
Land at Tierra at the southern tip of Tierra Bomba Island and explore the moated Fort of San Fernando de Bocachica, a circular castle with two arrow-shaped defensive bastions. The fortress crosses fire with the Battery of San Jose de Bocachica on the smaller Abanico Island about a kilometre away.
