Jews have achieved prominent positions in the Chilean government and other areas of influence, and have played a key part in the founding of the country, both before and after its independence in 1813. Approximately 12,500 of Chile's 15,000 Jews today reside in the capital of Santiago. Other smaller communities exist in Viña Del Mar (Valparaiso), Concepcion, Temuco, and Valdivia. Since 1920, Chile has implemented a clear separation between church and state, which has helped the Jews to achieve prominent status in the government and other fields. There are two day schools in the country as well as a clinic and old age home for the community and the University of Chile in Santiago has had a Jewish Studies Department since 1968. Your tour begins with a drive from Valapraiso to Santiago via the renowned wine-producing Casablanca Valley. Once in Santiago, you’ll tour the most interesting Jewish sites and areas of the city as well as visit the impressive Colonial and historical center. In Santiago, you will travel to the historical center to see the Presidential Palace "La Moneda" and Constitution Square. You will also see the Ex-National Congress building and the Justice Tribunal buildings en route to the impressive Plaza de Armas (Main Square). Here, we find the Municipal Cathedral, Ex-Governor’s Palace, Main Post Office and National Historic Museum. From here you’ll travel to the upper residential neighbourhood of Las Condes and past the biggest Jewish school in the city known as the Haim Weizman-Ort Hebrew Institute that today enrolls 1,700 students. In Las Condes, you will visit the Estadio Israelita Club and Synagogue. Next, you’ll visit the Ten Commandments Monument known by its inscription that claims it was copied from the old Jerusalem Bible. From here you will visit the Main Santiago Synagogue (or Similar).
