The Canadian Experience – 3 Day Multi-Adventure

Discover the forests of Algonquin Park the way the Indians knew them and enjoy an exhilarating introduction to several winter sports: dog-sledding, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. We stay in the comfortable Algonquin Wilderness Eco-Lodge, which is tucked away in a remote corner of the Park. The Lodge has a large lounge and fireplace and the natural pine and stone interior creates a cozy ambience. The Eco-Lodge is ideal for those wishing to experience the Canadian wilderness without having to “rough it”. In fact, your experience begins with a leisurely 2.7 km walk or ski through Algonquin Park to reach our front doors. Don’t worry — your luggage will be transferred for you!

The Eco-Lodge has no phones and no electricity. Yet, with a combination of alternative energy sources, the Eco-Lodge still provides all the finer comforts, such as indoor plumbing, 17 bedrooms, 2 primitive hot showers, and even an outdoor wood-fired hot tub and sauna! It is lit with propane lanterns and heated with a wood furnace, creating a warm and cozy place to spend a few days while experiencing “real” Canadian wilderness adventures.

......................................................................................................................................................

Day 1: Toronto – Algonquin Park
Early departure from Toronto travelling north through scenic farmland and picturesque “cottage country”. Late morning arrival on the southern border of Algonquin Park where we meet up with our dog sled teams. After receiving instruction on how to handle the sleds we set off for our sled ride. This is always an exciting experience
with the dogs barking and pulling at the sleds, the trees whipping past, and the breeze in our faces. We sled along private trails in the majestic forests surrounding Algonquin. There is a good chance that we may see wildlife like moose or even a lone wolf! Overnight at the Eco-Lodge.

Day 2: Algonquin Park
Our second day’s activity is cross country skiing. We strap on our skis and follow the groomed trails through Algonquin Park. The path will lead us through hardwood bush, an excellent place to see moose or at least their tracks in the snow. We stop for lunch in a “prospector’s tent” for a chance to rest and warm up by a blazing fire. Overnight at the Eco-Lodge.

Day 3: Algonquin Park – Toronto
Again we journey into the forests of Algonquin, but today we make our own trails on snowshoes! As we push through crisp and untouched snow we keep an eye out for the ever present signs of wildlife! This is how much of Canada was traveled — you can almost imagine yourself as a seasoned explorer! Our final encounter with the wild is a stop at a private forest where we have the opportunity (if we’re lucky) of coming face to face with a real wolf! From the safety of an observation room at the Wolf Research Centre of course! Here we learn the truth (and the lies) about these magnificent beasts through the various educational displays. Transfer back to Toronto arriving in the late afternoon.
