Depart from your selected pickup location in Whitehorse, Yukon, for a scenic 50-minute drive to the town of Carcross for a full-day of ice fishing and nature viewing on frozen Nares Lake.
Nestled in the Nares and Montana mountains, Carcross was originally named Caribou Crossing for the large herds that once swam across the Nares River. Today, there are fewer caribou, but there may be other animals to spy roaming the outskirts of the small town.
Your small group takes a brief tour of the historic downtown buildings, then travels over to Nares Lake for a morning of ice fishing with your expert guide. In the colder months, enter a wood-heated ice hut on the frozen lake to break out your provided gear and get started. On the sunny spring outings, pull up a lawn chair and enjoy a fire, started by your guide, on the ice. It’s a great way to experience an ancient pastime and sport, no matter your age or skill level.
Your guide will give you pointers as you bait your line and drop it in the fishing hole. Depending on the time of year, the ice of the frozen-over lake can grow to be as thick as 3 feet (1m)! Sit and chat about local history and the region as you wait for a bite from what might be a lake trout or grayling.
All that sitting around can make one hungry! Enjoy an authentic Yukoner hot lunch cooked on a wood-burning stove. Your meal is made from local ingredients, and includes fresh fruit and veggies, dips, juice, dessert and plenty of hot drinks. If you catch a fish, your guide will even fillet it to cook over a fire right in front of you!
Once your day out in the wild is over, you will be transported back to your selected location in Whitehorse.
