Full Day Active Angkor

Long before there was Angkor, there was Rolous, the remains of which offer an intriguing visit. Join us for this active full day trek to the temples known as the Rolous Group just a few kilometres away from the more famous site. You will cycle – often on dirt tracks – through the lush countryside surrounding Siem Reap, passing small villages with friendly children in scenes that you would not imagine still possible in the globalised 21st century. Along the way, pause to watch seasonal activities such as rice planting and harvesting or try local snacks.

The three temples that make up the group date from the ninth century. They are mostly ruined but well preserved enough to make for intriguing investigation – at times you will almost feel like Indiana Jones or Lara Croft in Tomb Raider as you weave your way around these ancient archaeological sites.

The temples, Bakong, Lolei and Preah Ko, represent the remains of the first major capital of the Khmer Empire, and are the earliest site of the 600-year Angkor period that is open to visitors. Bakong was the principle temple of the group and was the first real pyramidal-shaped temple built in Cambodia. Lolei stands on what was originally an island surrounded by a moat.

Afterwards, visit a non-profit organisation that supports disadvantaged youths in the area and teaches them the traditional art of shadow-puppet making, and then watch a shadow puppet show. Eat a delicious Khmer lunch and have a rest in a hammock before cycling back to Siem Reap. The total distance covered on this cycling tour in Siem Reap is between 35km and 40km.

The Apsara Authority, which manages the complex, reserves the right to refuse entry to certain areas to guests who wear clothing that’s considered immodest. No smoking, drinking alcohol or touching the carvings is permitted in and around the temples.
