Sofia's Highlights 6 hours

Discover the real and authentic soul of Sofia, a bustling capital in which East meets West and where the old meets the new. This city of contrasts is one of the oldest settlements in Europe and this impressive legacy is reflected in an urban landscape that combines history with modernity. See museums, churches, palaces and castles. And enjoy a delicious traditional tea break – a true taste of Bulgaria.

The tour proper begins at the National Museum of History, which has hundreds of thousands of exhibits and is one of the biggest in the Balkans. Learn about the most important and heroic moments in the Bulgarian history during the guided tour. Continue to the nearby Boyana Church, which is a Unesco World Heritage Site. It boasts a stunning collection of beautiful and priceless frescoes that date from the 13th century.

Transfer to the city centre for a cultural and historical walking tour taking in some of the most emblematic buildings in the city. The Presidency, Alexander Nevsky Cathedral – a gigantic golden-domed architectural masterpiece that can hold 10,000 worshippers – the former royal palace, the Church of St Nicholas the Miracle-Maker (popularly known as the Russian Church), the remains of the ancient fortress and the fourth century Church of St George.

During the tour, take a tea break with a difference. Taste authentic Kazanlak tea, which is made from rose oil, and a tasty homemade cake with jam, also prepared from rose oil.
