Take a journey into Bulgaria’s fascinating past with this full day guided tour to the picturesque village of Koprivshtitsa and the ancient city of Plovdiv. Both are packed with well-preserved houses, palaces and churches while each offers a different perspective on bygone times. Koprivshtitsa boasts a wide variety of Bulgarian architecture and Plovdiv has a wealth or Roman ruins. As there is so much to see, the tour has an intensive itinerary with extended time for sightseeing.
Koprivshtitsa is a museum-town with more than 300 well-preserved architectural, artistic, historical and ethnographical monuments from the Bulgarian revival period, which ran from the 1760s to the 1870s, and almost every street offers a photo opportunity. The walking tour through the charming cobbled streets focuses on the most representative house-museums, authentic crafts and ethnographic expositions. The fairytale-like stone bridge, the deep blue Dormition of the Theotokos Church with its almost cluttered interior, the Oslekov and Debelyanov houses… all evoke a quintessentially Bulgarian style.
In the afternoon we head to Plovdiv, one of the oldest cities in Europe and Bulgaria’s second largest. Walk along timeless narrow medieval alleys to visit the most emblematic sights: the Roman forum and theatre, the fortress of Nebet Tepe, the Church of Saints Constantine and Helena, and a wonderful collection of 19th century merchants’ houses. The tour ends with free time for shopping on the main pedestrian street.
