Rio de Janeiro’s Botanical Garden or Jardim Botanico is one of the most beautiful natural attractions here in Rio de Janeiro. It was founded in 1808 by John VI of Portugal and was opened to the public in 1822. Designed to acclimatize the spices of plants brought from the East Indies, the park is huge at almost 350 acres and contains over 6000 species of plants and trees.
The major attractions are the imperial palm trees, the orchid house and threatened plants such as "pau-brasil"(redwood trees) , "acará amarelo" ,huge water lilies (Victorias-Regias) and "pau mulato".
The next stop of the tour is the biggest urban forest in the world, the Tijuca National Park. Its flora had been devastated by the end of the 19th century to give way to coffee plantations. Reforestation brought back native Atlantic Rainforest species.
There are trails, waterfalls, a chapel and a museum. The Tijuca Forest covers around 3,200 hectares. Stop at the Chinese View Belvedere and admire a panoramic view of the Ipanema and Copacabana beaches, Guanabara Bay, and Sugar Loaf Mountain. On the way back stop at Pepino beach, where participants will see hang gliders in flight, one of the most exciting Rio de Janeiro attractions.
