Day 1: Arrival In Paro - Thimphu
Arrival at Paro International Airport and drive to Thimphu, capital of Bhutan, which is a one-hour drive and located at 2,300m above the sea level. Work off the lunch by visiting the MEMORIAL CHORTEN, or include it on your arrival. The Chorten has great significance in the religious life of the town people and symbolizes, as do all such monuments, the different level of the Buddha’s mind and teaching. When ritually circumambulated clockwise, one gains merit for the next life and atones for
present sins.
If you are in Thimphu during week days, visit the TRADITIONAL BHUTANESE MEDICINE, a blend of Indian ayurvedic and Chinese herbal practices, is carried out at the indigenous Hospital. Visit PAINTING SCHOOL, children study a course in religious drawing and painting. There are also course in woodcarving and mask making. Further along the same road is the NATIONAL LIBRARY, built in 1969 and located in a new Bhutanese style building. The museum contain an important collection of foreign books on Bhutan, the Himalaya and the Buddhism, and a unique series of Bhutanese and Tibetan books and manuscripts imprinted with woodblocks.
In the evening, stroll through town and peep into the shops where you will find typical samples of the town-folk’s basic needs.
Day 2: Thimphu - Punakha
Early breakfast in the hotel and depart for the semi-tropical Punakha situated in the north. This place enjoy a warm climate and exceptional rice harvests. In the former time, Thimphu and Punakha residence used to practice migration. But the Monastic Body still practice today. En route visit SIMTOKHA DZONG before climbing Dochula pass for mountain vistas. Moving to the top of Dochula pass there are 108 chortens called “DRUK WANGYEL CHOTEN,”with colorful flags surrounding the area.
In a clear sky this pass provides the best place to see and take photos of the snow capped mountains. Reaching Punakha visit the CHIMI LHAKHANG, a small 15th century temple famous for its fertility endowments/rites due to the blessing of Dharma Lord Drukpa Kinley. Finally, visit the PUNAKHA DZONG (Palace of Great Happiness), built in 1637. The dzong is beautifully located in between the two rivers called Pho(male) and Mo(female) chhu (river). The dzong offers many story and myths. It was the capital of Bhutan till 1955.
Day 3: Punakha - Paro
Early breakfast and drive back to Paro. On arrival, settle in the hotel and then visit PARO RINPUNG DZONG (Fortress on the Heap of jewels) it was built by Zhabdrung in 1644 after the Hungrel Fort built by lam Dung Dung was offered to Zhabdrung. You can have a good view of UGYEN PELRI PALACE (Palace on Wheels) built by Paro Penlop,Tshering Penjor in 1930.
Later on stroll around the small township of Paro. Visit the town temple DRUK CHODING TEMPLE built in 1525, built by Ngawang Chogyel..Spend the evening visiting shops in Paro.
Day 4: Hike to the Famous Taktsang
Early breakfast in the hotel and drive to the base of Taktsang monastery for the hike to the famous Tiger’s Nest built in 1694. It lies at 900 ft above the main Paro valley. An uphill climb for three hours will take you to the place which you will find worth sweating for. Evening time in the Paro town and overnight at hotel in Paro.
Day 5: Board Your Flight Back Home
Early breakfast in the hotel and drive to Paro International Airport to board your flight for your onward journey to BKK/KTM/DEL/CCU
