Experience Aboriginal culture and the romance of northern Australia's cattle country on a full-day visit to the Kimberley region from Broome. Traveling off-road by 4WD, meet the local Nyikina people and travel into the outback on a one-hour camel ride. Hear legends from the Aboriginal Dreamtime at ancient rock-art sites, and learn more about Aboriginal lore, medicine and food on a visit to the Jarlmadangah Community Centre. Scan the bush for birds and wildlife, and maybe spot a crocodile as you drive across the Fitzroy River on this special one-day immersion in the Kimberley's Aboriginal culture.
Leaving Broome in the early morning, take a drive by 4WD into the Kimberley cattle country. Enjoy a morning tea break at the remote Willare Roadhouse, then spot freshwater crocodiles as you cross the Fitzroy River.
Detouring from the highway, go off-road into Nyikina country. Your route takes in part of the immense Liveringa cattle station for great photo opportunities at the old Mount Anderson shearing shed, a typical outback building of wood and corrugated iron dating from the 1950s.
Then hold on tight as you ride a camel through the outback on a one-hour camel trek. Travel with local Nyikina men, and learn about their ancient skills in bush tracking, bush medicine and bush tucker. Enjoy lunch with the Nyikina men, including gourmet salads featuring bush tucker from the Kimberley region.
After lunch, visit the Jarlmadangah Cultural Centre to hear about the history, art and culture of the Kimberley Aborigines, and take a bus tour of the Jarlmadangah Community.
The afternoon also includes a visit to an ancient rock-art site, where Nyikina guides reveal the Dreamtime stories and ancient lore depicted thousands of years ago. Share hot billy tea and damper bread around the campfire, before returning to Broome by 4WD vehicle, arriving at around 6:30pm.
